We embrace what makes Dana Point unique and what also sets us apart from our neighbors in Orange County. The arrival of European colonists to the area began with the expedition to Portolá (1769-1770). Starting in 1776, the inhabitants of the village of Ubange, near Dana Point, were transferred to the Mission of San Juan Capistrano to convert to Christianity and be exploited as labor to work on the mission grounds. In 1778, dissatisfaction with the missions led the Fifty tribe leader to a revolt that was stopped preventively by the Spaniards.
The port, built in the 1960s and opened on July 31, 1971, houses a marina, shops and restaurants, and is the starting point of the Catalina Express, a shuttle service to and from the city of Avalon on Catalina Island. The entire port of Dana Point, including the shops and restaurants of Embarcadero Marina, is about to be completely demolished and remodeled. The current vintage nautical style is being abandoned by a minimalist technological concept that uses metal roofs and minimalist gardens. Since then, Dana Point has gone from being a surf spot for teenagers in the 1950s to a beach town with tourist glitz and relaxed charm in equal measure. Richard Henry Dana (the author of Two Years Before the Mast) considered the high cliffs and protected coves of this area of Southern California to be the most beautiful place on the California coast.
While the state is known for its bustling cities and thrilling attractions, Dana Point is the ideal place to travel at a more relaxed pace. Dana Point Harbor is also an ideal place for water activities, such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and boating. The city was named after the Dana Point promontory, which in turn was named after Richard Henry Dana Jr. Although swallow flocks no longer arrive in large numbers at the San Juan Capistrano Mission, migratory whales can be seen near the coast, at Dana Point.
