The Dana Point SMCA covers nearly four square miles of marine habitat from the coast to depths of around 150 feet. Fire protection at Dana Point is provided by the Orange County Fire Authority and the Doctor's Ambulance ambulance service. Richard Henry Dana (the author of Two Years Before the Mast) considered the high cliffs and sheltered coves of this area of Southern California to be the most beautiful place on the California coast. Starting in 1776, the inhabitants of the village of Ubange, near Dana Point, were transferred to the Mission of San Juan Capistrano to convert to Christianity and be exploited as labor to work on the mission grounds. The chapel soon grew, received canonical status as a parish, and moved to its current location atop a cliff in Dana Point, overlooking Doheny State Beach.
